Ap|pease|ment [ə'pi:zmənt , …mɛnt ], das; -[s] [engl. appeasement < frz. apaisement = Beschwichtigung, zu: apaiser = beruhigen, besänftigen, zu altfrz. pais = Friede < lat. pax] (Politik, oft abwertend):
Politik ständigen Nachgebens gegenüber expansiver od. subversiver Machtpolitik bes. totalitärer Staaten; Beschwichtigungspolitik.

Appeasement
 
[ə'piːzmənt, englisch] das, -s, Befriedung, Beschwichtigung; kritisch gebrauchte Bezeichnung für die von der britischen Regierung 1933-39 verfolgte Politik des Ausgleichs gegenüber dem nationalsozialistischen Deutschland. Höhepunkt war der Abschluss des Münchener Abkommens (1938). Seitdem wurde Appeasement oft als Schlagwort zur Beschreibung einer Politik ständigen Nachgebens gegenüber expansiver und subversiver Machtpolitik v. a. totalitärer Staaten verwendet.
